Cherry Blossom

Grapevine

Karuizawa Carving, as it is now known, started in the mid-Meiji Era. The celebrated craftsmen of Nikko had already mastered the techniques of carving delicate images of bamboo, pine, plum trees, peony, iris, and chrysanthemums. However, at the request of Westerners they also carved flowers, cherry trees, and grapes, which collectively are the current motifs.
